The Global HIV/AIDS Data, Epidemiology and Research Manager is responsible for providing high‑level technical leadership to AHF’s Global Program – Global Quality and HMIS by analyzing and interpreting large, multi‑country HIV/AIDS/STI programmatic and clinical datasets and translating findings into practical, actionable guidance for frontline teams and country leadership—particularly across Global South programs in Africa. Operating under the guidance of the Senior Medical Director – Global Programs, the role strengthens routine program monitoring through improved indicators, dashboards and analytic products, supports data‑driven quality improvement by identifying performance gaps and trends across the HIV care continuum, and promotes cross‑country learning through synthesis of evidence and best practices.

The position will be based from AHF South Africa Gauteng Johannesburg Offices

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

Lead the analysis and interpretation of large-scale, multi-country HIV/AIDS/STI programmatic and clinical datasets. Scientifically assess trends and performance across the HIV care continuum. Conduct stratified analyses relevant to African program realities. Translate scientific findings into clear, actionable insights for non-technical audiences. Support development and refinement of indicators, dashboards, and analytical products for program monitoring and improvement.

QUALITY OF SERVICES IMPROVEMENT

Use routine data to identify gaps, trends, and opportunities for improving quality of HIV prevention, care, and treatment services. Collaborate with global, regional, and country teams to design and support data-driven quality improvement initiatives. Contribute to evidence-based recommendations and operational guidance, aligned to country contexts and applicable guidelines. Support rapid-cycle learning.

SCIENTIFIC WRITING AND KNOWLEDGE GENERATION (PUBLICATIONS)

Lead and contribute to preparation of scientific abstracts, posters, and manuscripts for submission to international conferences and peer-reviewed journals. Develop publication-ready analyses and narratives from routine program data and implementation experience in Africa and other Global South settings. Ensure high scientific rigor, ethical standards, and appropriate interpretation of findings, including limitations and context.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND CAPACITY BUILDING

Provide technical support and mentorship to staff at facility, country, and regional levels on data use, interpretation, and basic epidemiological concepts. Contribute to training materials, guidance documents, and learning resources related to HIV data use, epidemiology, and research writing. Support collaboration with academic and research partners as needed, including strengthening local evidence-generation and dissemination capacity.

COLLABORATION AND COORDINATION

Work closely with Global Program, HMIS, M&E, and Clinical teams to ensure alignment between data systems, analytical needs, and program priorities. Represent the organization in relevant research collaborations, and scientific forums, as appropriate. Contribute to cross-country learning by synthesizing findings and sharing best practices across Africa and other Global South regions.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Advanced postgraduate degree (PhD) in public health, infectious diseases, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in HIV/AIDS/STI epidemiology and research.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in HIV/AIDS/STI research, data analysis, epidemiology, and/or program management.
  • Proven experience working with large, complex routine health datasets across multiple regions and countries.
  • Demonstrated track record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience working in low- and/or middle-income countries with a high HIV burden, including African program contexts.
  • Experience providing technical support and capacity building to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Desirable Skills
  • Experience supporting HIV programs in sub-Saharan Africa and familiarity with contextual determinants
  • Practical familiarity with routine data platforms used in African settings and EMR environments
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting HIV program outcomes for key populations and priority groups
  • Understanding of co-infections and syndemics common in African HIV programs and implications for analysis and service quality improvement.
  • Strong ability to translate implementation realities into publication-quality manuscripts, including mixed-methods or operational/implementation research write-ups.
